What is continence?
The term Continence is used when an individual has control of their bladder and bowel.
A continent person:
- Recognises the need to go to the toilet
- Identifies the correct place to go
- Can hold back the urine/faeces until the correct place is reached
- Can pass urine or faeces when they are in the correct place
Incontinence is a condition where there is an involuntary loss of urine or faeces.
“Incontinence is a quality of life issue. While not a life threatening condition, it has considerable impact upon the mental, emotional and physical well being of the affected.” Norton (1966)
Continence Management relates to helping a resident regain control of their bladder and/or bowel function.
