Good nutrition is essential to quality care. Mealtimes are an important social occasion for care home residents and, by providing a diet appropriate to every resident’s individual needs, we can help them to stay healthy and enjoy a good quality of life.
Meeting the Health and Safety Act Regulations and the Care Quality Commission Outcomes
Regulation 14 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010 state that:
Where food and hydration are provided to service users as a component of the carrying on of the regulated activity, the registered person must ensure that service users are protected from the risks of inadequate nutrition and dehydration, by means of the provision of:
- a choice of suitable and nutritious food and hydration, in sufficient quantities to meet service users’ needs;
- food and hydration that meet any reasonable requirements arising from a service user’s religious or cultural background; and
- support, where necessary, for the purposes of enabling service users to eat and drink sufficient amounts for their needs.
“Food and hydration” includes, where applicable, parenteral nutrition and the administration of dietary supplements where prescribed.
To meet this regulation, it is necessary for service providers to provide food and drink that is tailored to the individual’s requirements (including dietary preferences, cultural and religious requirements and provision of assistance where necessary), carry out nutrition screening and implement appropriate actions as required, and provide choice. Refer to the Essential Standards of Quality and Safety (CQC, 2010) for full details on how to meet this regulation.
